Co-owner Thomas Sexton is an experienced restaurateur. He co-owns five successful pizzerias that also serve more elaborate dishes. When he was ready to open the "next level" restaurant, he researched different kinds of dishes for two years before deciding on which ones would go on his menu. He found his ideal location and was ready to go. Cafe Toscano is stunning and contemporary. Earth tones run throughout the two rooms where mirrors, candles, beads, banquettes, booths, a lively bar, and crisp white linen covered tables complete the retro-chic Manhattan-style look. The knowledgeable staff, led by Thomas' sister Katherine, is friendly and attentive.
The style of cooking "thoughtful." Cafe Toscano uses "certified" organic products whenever possible. The menu is a balanced blend of classic and new style dishes. We sampled Pappa al Pomodoro, a real Tuscan tomato and bread soup. It was rich and savory and good to the last drop! Cozzi Nero was a dish we didn't expect to find in an Italian restaurant - an oversized crock of mussels in a sweet and zesty coconut broth. Homemade fettuccine, Paglia e Fieno, was covered with tender pieces of veal and mushrooms in a hearty brown Madeira wine sauce. Wines are from Italy and California and are reasonably priced and there is a creative selection of mixed cocktails. Desserts are sweet sensations. We enjoyed the Silk and Satin, a decadent blend of chocolate mousse, cheesecake and ganache.
The upbeat tone at Cafe Toscano is set by its trendy decor, excellent food and the professionalism of the staff.
